My precious mother gives me grief nearly every time she asks how the blog is doing because she's a little embarassed by the word "sexy". She's not the only one who has asked why I chose to name the blog Frugal Is The New Sexy, so I thought I'd answer the question in the form of a blog post.
It's very simple, really. I'd like to believe that my husband has always loved me and found me attractive, but ever since I started making every one of his hard earned pennies stretch further than he knew was possible, the man is positively whooped. He's proud of the work and time that I devote to saving money, stocking our kitchen and cooking meals for our family. He loves when I return from a trip to the grocery store with hundreds of dollars worth for just a few bucks.
When we unexpectedly became a one income family this past summer, we made the decision to do whatever possible to ensure that I was able to stay home with our daughters instead of returning to work. The adjustment certainly hasn't been easy, but it has been an enormous blessing!
For the first time in our 15 years together, we're learning to have a healthy respect for money and for everything that God has provided for our family. We're in our 30's now and, suddenly, it's painfully obvious that our 3 daughters will be grown and potentially heading off to college or (gasp!) heading down the aisle before we know it! Correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that neither a college education nor a wedding is exactly "cheap" these days...
So, we had to start somewhere. I hope they're right (whoever "they" are) when they say that it's "better late than never" to make a change. Though I haven't kept track of every penny I've spent or saved since July, I estimate that it's at least 68% off retail grocery prices.
So, there you have it. Frugal is the new sexy, yes?
